Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the hours between two times?

Convert both times to minutes after midnight, subtract the start from the end, then divide by 60. For 8:45 AM to 5:15 PM: 1,035 − 525 = 510 minutes = 8 hours 30 minutes (8.5 hours). Subtract any unpaid break before converting.

How are overnight shifts handled?

If the end time is the same as or earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the period ends the next day and adds 24 hours — so 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.

Can I subtract a lunch break?

Yes. Enter the unpaid break in minutes and it is subtracted from the total, giving you net worked time.

What formats does the result show?

The duration is shown in hours and minutes, as decimal hours (useful for payroll), and as total minutes.

Can I total a whole week of shifts?

Yes — use the Time Card Calculator to enter clock-in and clock-out times for every day of the week, with overtime and gross pay.
