Frequently asked questions
Is the moon phase the same everywhere?
Yes — the illuminated fraction of the moon is essentially identical worldwide on a given date. Only moonrise and moonset times change with your location.
What do the phase names mean?
The cycle runs New Moon → Waxing Crescent → First Quarter → Waxing Gibbous → Full Moon → Waning Gibbous → Last Quarter → Waning Crescent, then back to New Moon over about 29.5 days.
How is illumination calculated?
It's the percentage of the moon's visible disc lit by the sun, computed from the sun–earth–moon geometry for the selected date.
How accurate are the full moon and new moon times?
They're calculated with Jean Meeus's lunar phase algorithm from Astronomical Algorithms, including the planetary corrections and the difference between atomic and Earth-rotation time. The results agree with published almanac times to within a minute.
Why does a full moon fall on a different date in another country?
A phase is a single instant worldwide. The full moon of August 28, 2026 at 04:18 UTC is still the evening of August 27 in Chicago and Los Angeles (and just after midnight on August 28 in New York). The moon calendar shows dates in your own time zone, or in UTC before your browser has loaded it.
What is a blue moon?
The second full moon in one calendar month. It happens every two to three years, for example May 31, 2026. Because it depends on the date, a blue moon in one time zone may not be one in another. The moon calendar labels it for your time zone.
Why is the moon drawn lit on the right?
The calendar shows the moon as seen from the northern hemisphere, where a waxing moon is lit on the right. In the southern hemisphere it's mirrored. The phase tool flips the drawing when you pick a city south of the equator.
